Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to a new year at Rosehill. The governors hope that you had a good holiday and that your child has returned full of energy and ready to learn. The last academic year had its ups and downs and there was much change. It is a credit to our dedicated staff and supportive parents that there were many successes. As governors, we receive regular reports from the leadership at the school telling us about the marvellous things that happen. All of the governors have found time to visit the school, most of them several times, and have always come away impressed with what they have learnt and experienced.

As you know, one of the tasks for this year is to appoint a new headteacher. The law requires governors to advertise nationally, and governors held several discussions in the final term of the school year to discuss the best way of doing this. The leadership team under the direction of acting headteacher Cheryl Steele, has done a marvellous job of meeting the challenges and coping with the budget demands – the latter ever more difficult as I am sure you are aware from items in the media.

Attracting headteachers is difficult as the pool of teachers willing to take on that role has reduced over recent years, especially in special education. Governors decided that some consistency in approach and security in leadership was needed at this particular point in time, and so asked the acting headteacher if she was willing to continue for the whole year, allowing the governors to carry out a proper search without rushing, and giving stability during the current academic year.

Mrs Steele agreed to continue in her acting headteacher role until August 2018, and so the recruitment of a new headteacher will have a target of the successful candidate taking up the post from September 2018. Claire Waldrom will take on the role of acting deputy headteacher and Kathryn Barnicott as acting assistant headteacher during this period.

I am sure you will continue to give Mrs Steele and her leadership team your support during the year and the governors look forward to receiving further reports on the great work going on in the school. We hope that 2017-2018 will be a successful and happy one for your child.

Best wishes,

Dr Christopher Reynolds JP OBE KSG - Chair Rosehill Governing Board
