Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)
At Rosehill School PSHE is a core area of the curriculum as it is involves learning about acquiring and developing necessary life skills (taught at a level appropriate to a child's needs and learning style). For pupils in the Early Years, Key Stage 1 - 2, the emphasis is upon developing skills though a cross-curricular approach in all areas of school life. This approach is also used in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, but pupils here will have increased access to discrete timetabled PSHE lessons, including Relationships & Sex Education (RSE), Citizenship and Drugs Education. PSHE encourages our pupils to develop individual independence skills at a level appropriate to their individual needs. This includes travel training and working with others. PSHE helps all pupils develop an understanding of themselves and others. They learn to lead confident, healthy, and responsible lives in the school and beyond. PSHE helps pupils to:
- Raise their self-esteem and to feel respect for others
- Develop as individuals
- Make choices and decisions
- Learn to understand themselves physically, emotionally, socially and sexually
- Develop personal autonomy by having a degree of responsibility over their lives
- Understand relationships with others
- Develop their independence and an ability to feel control over their own lives.

Our assemblies act as one of the main ways by which we come together as an entire school community, create our positive reflective ethos and promote our values-based education. Assemblies contain times of quiet reflection that enable pupils to develop learning of values and appreciate aspirations. They often serve to develop our positive school ethos that affirms the school's identity and aspirations. The result being that that the school hosts whole school assemblies where children and young people come together to celebrate, share and reflect on school life and achievements, the local community and global dimensions.
For some pupils, verbal communication is either very difficult, or impossible. However, this does not mean they are without a ‘voice’. Over the last 12 months, our student council have accomplished some very significant changes in the school community – Introducing Anti-Bullying Champions and RSE days. In the process, they have learnt about nominating and voting, the importance of resolving conflict fairly, communicating their views through representatives, and taking part in school based activities.
Relationship & Sex Education (RSE)
At Rosehill School we understand the importance of educating pupils about relationships and sex, in order for pupils to make responsible and well-informed decisions in their lives. The DfE’s guidance, ‘Sex and Relationship Education Guidance’, defines this programme as: “Learning about physical, moral and emotional development; understanding the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and health.” The programme will be taught objectively and does not intend to promote any form of sexual orientation. The overall aims of RSE include:
- Develop a range of appropriate personal skills
- Develop an understanding of sex, sexuality and relationships
- The aims will be achieved through developing an understanding of:
- A range of values and moral issues including the importance of family life
- The biological facts related to human growth and development, including reproduction
- The importance of healthy relationships
- Fostering independence skills in areas such as; personal hygiene, personal safety, healthy eating, thinking skills, self-organisation, concentration and emotional wellbeing
- Fostering independence and skills for life whilst introducing some vocational activities at pastime and/or interest level.

What is 'All Together' and how do we take part?
An 'All Together School 'is one that has proven its activity to reduce bullying of all children. The All Together programme has been developed over the last three years and builds upon the work of the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s programme which saw significant positive results. Participating schools are supported on and offline to make whole school change to its anti-bullying practices, using a social model approach. The programme includes a special focus on reducing bullying of disabled children and those with SEN but aims to reduce bullying of all children and young people. It is funded by the Department for Education and delivered by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, with support from the Council for Disabled Children, Contact a Family and Achievement for All. Rosehill have signed up to the 'All Together bulletin', a monthly bulletin which will update our pupils and staff. Becoming an All Together School means that Rosehill is committed to Anti Bullying and we are working hard to ensure we support this champagne locally and nationally.
