How We Support Attendance

If we are concerned about a pupil's attendance, we will:

  • Contact parents and carers to discuss any barriers
  • Work with families to identify appropriate support
  • Monitor attendance and wellbeing
  • Involve other professionals where appropriate
  • Develop an attendance support plan if needed

Our aim is always to work in partnership with families to improve attendance before considering any formal action.

Reporting an Absence

If your child is unable to attend school, please:

  • Contact the school office by 8:30am on the first day of absence.
  • Inform us of the reason for the absence and, where possible, how long you expect it to last.
  • Keep the school updated if the absence continues.

📞 0115 915 5815

Where possible, medical appointments should be arranged outside school hours. If this is not possible, we ask that pupils attend school before and/or after their appointment whenever practical.

Leave of Absence

Headteachers may only authorise leave of absence during term time in exceptional circumstances.

Any requests should be made in writing using the school's Leave of Absence Request Form before the planned absence.

Attendance Matters

At Rosehill School, we believe that every day counts. Regular attendance helps children and young people feel connected, develop positive relationships, and access the learning and support they need to achieve their full potential.

Research shows that good attendance is closely linked to improved educational outcomes, wellbeing and future opportunities. Being in school also helps pupils develop confidence, independence, communication skills and friendships.

Why is attendance important?

Regular attendance helps pupils to:

  • Access learning and make good progress
  • Develop communication, independence and life skills
  • Build confidence, resilience and self-esteem
  • Form positive friendships and relationships
  • Maintain good emotional wellbeing and a sense of belonging
  • Develop routines and habits that prepare them for adulthood and employment
  • Enjoy the wide range of experiences and opportunities school provides

Most importantly, being in school enables our pupils to learn, grow and have fun.

Working Together

Good attendance is everyone's responsibility. We work closely with pupils, parents, carers and external professionals to identify and overcome any barriers to attendance as early as possible.

We recognise that some pupils, particularly those with SEND, may face challenges that affect attendance. Our approach is always to listen, understand and provide support wherever possible.

If you are worried about your child's attendance, please contact us. The earlier we know about a difficulty, the sooner we can work together to help.

How Parents and Carers Can Help

You can support your child's attendance by:

  • Encouraging a positive attitude towards school
  • Talking about their day and celebrating achievements
  • Establishing consistent morning and bedtime routines
  • Ensuring your child arrives on time and ready to learn
  • Avoiding unnecessary absences wherever possible
  • Contacting school as soon as concerns arise

If your child is experiencing difficulties attending school, please speak to us. We are here to help.
