Maths is vital in everyday life as it encourages early thinking skills, logical reasoning, and the ability to think in abstract ways. At the earliest stages of development, where thinking centres around concrete situations and events, pupils strive to make sense of experiences and sensations that involve changes in shape, pattern, quantity, space and time. Such experiences help them master their approach to problem situations flexibly, to move from random to trial and improvement responses, and on to anticipate and predict.

At Rosehill, Maths is focused on providing powerful ways of reasoning, exploring, investigating, and understanding the world. The potential to apply the skills of making comparisons, identifying differences, investigating relationships, and establishing connections reflects the importance of the subject across the curriculum during the school years.

Pupils are taught in a rigorous and systemic structure that develops the understanding of the concrete, pictorial and abstract steps of mathematical areas to gain mastery for maths. Increasingly, pupils will plan, reflect, and come to recognise and evaluate alternative solutions. In this way, mathematical skills and understanding build on the earliest perceptual and cognitive learning. Sensory maths is also introduced across the school to support practical learners.

At Rosehill we teach maths using a range of practical resources that help to support the sensory needs of our pupils. We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to make connections between maths and the world around them.

At Rosehill School we use Numicon resources in maths.  The pupils enjoy exploring the Numicon shapes during sensory play, developing their counting and number skills and even completing mathematical sums.
