Our Curriculum

Introduction

Rosehill School is a maintained special school for autistic learners aged 4 to 19. Our pupils have a wide range of strengths, needs and abilities, and many experience additional differences and conditions alongside their autism.

We are proud to offer a curriculum that is ambitious, engaging and highly personalised. Designed specifically for autistic learners, it reflects our vision of enabling every pupil to achieve the best possible outcomes in learning, social and emotional wellbeing, and preparation for adulthood.

At the heart of our curriculum is the belief that every pupil can make meaningful progress and achieve positive long-term outcomes with the right support, opportunities and high aspirations. Learning is built around each pupil's individual strengths, interests, needs and aspirations, helping them develop greater independence, confidence and employability skills.

Communication is a key priority throughout the curriculum. We take a holistic and creative approach to developing speaking, listening, reading, writing and phonics skills, ensuring pupils can communicate effectively and access learning successfully.

Our curriculum also places a strong emphasis on life skills, personal development and preparation for adulthood. Key skills and experiences are woven throughout all areas of learning to help pupils become as independent as possible and participate as fully as possible in their communities.

Equality, Inclusion and Accessibility

Rosehill is committed to ensuring all pupils can access and engage with the curriculum. We adapt learning to meet individual needs and comply with our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014.

Further information can be found in our SEND Policy and SEND Information Report on the school's Policies page.

Evidence-Informed Practice

Our curriculum is shaped by educational research, evidence-based practice and, most importantly, the views and experiences of our pupils and families. We continually review and refine our approach to ensure we provide the best possible learning opportunities.

We draw on current research from the Neuroinclusive Education Network (NEN), alongside the views of pupils, families and professionals, to ensure our curriculum reflects best practice in autism, neurodiversity and inclusive education. This enables us to continually develop our provision and achieve the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

Our approach recognises the importance of communication, emotional wellbeing, social understanding, sensory regulation, relationships and independence, alongside academic development.

Developing Our Curriculum

We understand that every autistic learner is unique. Our curriculum is carefully adapted to ensure all pupils have equal access to meaningful learning opportunities and can achieve success.

Subject leaders carefully sequence learning so that knowledge and skills build over time. The curriculum is designed to help pupils know more, remember more and apply their learning in a range of real-life situations.

Through high-quality teaching, specialist support and a personalised approach, we prepare pupils for their next stage of education, employment and adult life.
